U.S. Entrepreneurs Want to Lift Subsidy and Tariff on Ethanol

American businessmen have asked Congress to allow, as planned, the expiration at the end of 2011 the existing grant to American ethanol production, as well as customs the end of tariffs on imported ethanol, which affects Brazil.

"There is no need for this subsidy. The domestic ethanol industry is thriving ", said a spokesperson at the American Chamber of Commerce, in a letter sent to Congress.

December 31 is the end date for the subsidy of US$ 0.45 per gallon of ethanol produced in the United States, as well as the customs tariff of US$ 0.54 charged by gallon of imported ethanol. "These trade barriers prevent the access of consumers to potentially more economical options of fuel from friendly nations such as Brazil," said the letter.
